Evangelism Team
January 11, 2005 Meeting Minutes
In attendance were David Ashby, Dean Conklin, Dee Duncan, Lynda Fickling, Ken
Fong (taking minutes), Laura Kuhl (co-presiding), Jim Wolff (co-presiding).
We reviewed our ongoing projects:
Ken reported that the CD is in pretty good shape. He will update it
periodically as new material becomes available.
Dean is still interested in publishing Janet’s sermons in booklet form.
Dean also shared an idea he picked up at a church he visited recently. It
would involve sorting items in our bulletin according to I, R, and M.
Laura reported she has made no progress yet on forming the new teams.
It was reported that Jerry McLeland will be ordering new parking signs this
week.
Laura met with Little School recently; the overall tone of the meeting was
positive. She shared that our (ET) interest is in getting new members. Little
School reported on a number of activities they have undertaken recently that are
in this direction, including:
• Sending home the Advent Calendar, and sending out other similar material in
the future
• Offering preference to church members via earlier registration
• Tenth anniversary publicity
• Cooperation on Easter Fun Day
They also discussed some ideas for the future, including:
• Sending Invitation Cards out in information packets
• Building “mini Information Centers” at the downstairs entrances
• Using more Communications Team resources
• More pastor visibility
Jim suggested the team revisit our goals, now that it was a new year. We
agreed that we should be focusing on
1. Achieving greater member participation
2. Getting more new members
ET should be more strategic, and get others involved in the church in
achieving these goals. The particular suggestion discussed was asking each small
group to work on how it could be more IRM and more evangelistic. Perhaps one ET
member could be an interface to each group.
A related idea is to ask small groups to take over hospitality functions for
one week. For example, Home Improvements could do coffee at all three services
for one Sunday a year, or The Women of St. Luke’s could usher at all three
services for one Sunday a year. Training or supervision by someone(s)
experienced in the area would have to be provided. This would be done in a way
that gives that group more exposure to the congregation.
We decided to pursue this idea by picking a few teams and running these ideas
by them:
Youth: David Ashby
Home Improvements: Ken Fong
UMM: Dean Conklin
Women of St. Luke’s: Lynda Fickling
The ET member would:
1. Meet with the leadership of the small group and talk about our evangelism
goals of achieving greater member participation and getting more church members
2. Ask if they are interested in working with us
3. Brainstorm evangelism ideas specific to their group
4. Bring the results back to the next ET meeting
We also agreed to do a Lenten Invitation Card. Ken will work with the staff
on a calendar of events.
Action Items:
Jim Wolff: Will work on Dean’s ideas of publishing Janet’s sermons and
sorting our bulletin according to I, R, and M
David Ashby: Will meet with the Youth and report at the next ET meeting
Ken Fong: Will meet with Home Improvements and report at the next ET meeting
Will work on the Lenten Invitation Card
Dean Conklin: Will meet with UMM and report at the next ET meeting
Lynda Fickling: Will meet with the Women of St. Luke’s and report at the next
ET meeting
Laura Kuhl: Will review our plans with the Ministry Council on 1/25
Will email the pastors about being more visible at Little School
Will get the Nametag and Sign Teams moving
Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, February 8, at 7 PM in “John.”
