Evangelism Team Meeting
June 8, 2004
In attendance were Yvonne Amrine (from the Communications Team), David Ashby,
Dee Duncan, Ken Fong (scribing), and Laura Kuhl (presiding).
Our first topic of discussion was trying to rationalize the various
statements (of identity, vision/mission, values) that are being used at St.
Luke’s. We recommend replacing the version currently in the bulletin, directory,
Catalog of Ministries, and brochure with the version this team is using. Laura
will make this recommendation to the Ministry Council and the staff. See
Appendix A for full details.
Next, we reviewed identity statement usage, branding, and the use of the
United Methodist Church “Igniting Ministry” resources. We agreed that St. Luke’s
has worked hard and long to create our unique branding identity, and we plan to
retain it. We will further investigate the resources provided by the United
Methodist Church, after which we may consider incorporating elements of the
national branding (e.g., “Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors”) into ours.
1. Igniting Ministry training
• Ken will order a copy of the Igniting Ministry training material, using
the ET budget
• Laura will evaluate it and report to the ET
• This will be put on the ET agenda for the end of July
2. St. Andrew co-marketing including blending with the national campaign
• Yvonne will meet with her counterpart at St. Andrew
• She will report at the end of July
3. National campaign
• Yvonne will investigate what the national Igniting Ministry campaign is
planning for this area
• She will report to ET, Communications and Janet Forbes by the third week
of July (before the July Ministry Council meeting)
The team then reviewed the progress of the 3 SWOT efforts.
1. Ken presented the SMART goals for “members evangelizing.” He got lots of
constructive suggestions for the “index card” handout. He will draft the
proposed documents for the congregation and then work with Jerry McLeland and
David Ashby on them. This sub-group will tweak and test market the materials
during the summer and roll out in September a promotional campaign to encourage
the congregation to evangelize. We should plan to complete the campaign before
Stewardship begins.
2. Dee presented Lynda’s SMART goals on “visitor follow-up” along with his
own suggestions. The next step is to ask Lynda to write short job descriptions
(i.e., two sentences each) for people to staff the visitor follow-up teams,
along with any ideas to solicit team members (e.g., via ET members, the
Volunteer Monthly, discussions with Janet).
3. Laura handed out a document with a lot of details to help provide a more
“welcoming atmosphere.”
The 3 SWOT SMART Goal documents differed significantly in their contents and
level of detail, and we had a discussion of what SMART goals should be. {For
reference, see
Instructions, Form and Examples
and
Additional Form }
Then we got into a discussion of the need for more resources to implement the
plans that are already underway. It was observed that we’re spending most of our
time coming up with new goals, when we don’t have the resources to implement the
previous goals. We brainstormed some ideas for finding more people to help: via
Janet, the Volunteer Monthly, the Chronicle, the Bulletin, Lynda contacting her
referrals, a Ministry Moment, the web site, and names from the staff.
We decided that the focus of our next meeting would be on implementation and
obtaining the additional resources needed to implement our current plans. In
preparation, Laura agreed to write short job descriptions for ET members, the
visitor follow-up teams, the visitor center team, the hospitality team (with all
its parts), the parking lot team, and the signage team.
The next meeting will be June 15 at 7 PM in Classroom C.
