Evangelism Team
November 2, 2004 Meeting Minutes

In attendance were David Ashby, Dean Conklin, Lynda Fickling, Ken Fong (taking minutes), Laura Kuhl (presiding), Nancy Obertier and Jim Wolff.

We reviewed our ongoing projects:

Feedback has been positive on the new parking signs. We agreed that Jerry McLeland should order four more to replace the old signs.

David Ashby presented a $100 gift certificate to the Cheesecake Factory to Dave Cupp at last Sunday’s 9:30 service to thank him for the excellent job he did in building the Guest Services Center (GSC). Approximately $250 was reimbursed for materials. Dave and Ken Fong will be adding a “Guest Services” sign.

The red visitors bags seem to be working.

We are getting good feedback from the Guest Followup Teams. We need to recruit more team members so that the existing ones don’t get burned out. Suggestions were made to solicit for members at UMM and Disciple classes.

Ken Fong reported that the November version of the CD is basically done, and he circulated a draft of the new sleeve that Sharon Oliver has created.

Ken expects to get the Advent Invitation Card from Sharon Oliver this week. We decided to order 3,000 to 4,000 for Jesus Christ Superstar and to hand out to members to invite their friends and neighbors to our Advent events.

Jesus Christ Superstar: We plan to provide greeters and a Guest Services Center person. Several of the ET members volunteered to do this at the meeting, and more will be solicited by email. The greeters will put Advent Invitation Cards on all the seats in the Sanctuary.

Janice Ashby looks ready to lead the Nametag Team. The team is looking at a new type of name tag (using clips instead of pins) and new holders. Lanyards may be provided as an option. A major problem is where to put the holders so they are in the main traffic flow.

Laura Kuhl is working on scheduling the first meeting of the Hospitality Team.

Laura Kuhl is also working with Jenita Rhodes on the format (i.e., attendees) and date for a first meeting between ET and Little School to pursue increased evangelism through Little School.

Ken Fong is currently scheduling the taping of the Advocates, who will be introducing their small groups to the Next Steps (new members) classes.

Laura reported that the Ministry Council approved our expenditure of an additional $1,000 to pay for signs (parking and interior), GSC materials, and CD sleeves.

We discussed the “A Keepsake Christmas” theme for advent. Please forward any creative ideas to Lisa Hajek and the Communications Team.

As a team, we will be encouraging the congregation to use the new Advent Invitation Cards to invite friends and neighbors to our Advent events. Jim Wolff will write a Chronicle article.

Dean Conklin updated us on some UMM activities. They will visit DenUM on 11/20. On Friday, 12/3, probably at Dan Raap’s, the group will watch Radio together. Someone will teach the book Man in the Mirror.

Finally, Lynda Fickling shared some materials from Peachtree Road UMC that Janet Forbes brought back from a recent visit, to give us some ideas about how we might make St. Luke’s more invitational.

Action Items:

Jerry McLeland: Order 4 more parking signs

Laura Kuhl: Follow up with Cindy Raap about her interest in helping with evangelism.

Ken Fong: Volunteered to draft an ET report for the upcoming Church Conference and circulate it for comments.

Will promote the new CD (e.g., in the Chronicle).

Jim Wolff: Will write a Chronicle article (due 11/5) to promote use of the Advent Invitation Cards to invite friends and neighbors to our Advent events.

Dean Conklin: Will make sure the UMM activities are publicized in the Chronicle.

Our next meeting is Tuesday, Nov. 16, at 7 PM; we’ll meet to make sure we’re ready for Advent.
