Ministry Council
October 25, 2005
Present: Martha Boon, Lynda Fickling, Chris Wilterdink, Ken Fong,
Randy Dunn, Jerry McLelland, Roy Palmer, Marie Fornof
Opening: Martha opened us with prayer.
Financial Report: Roy Palmer presented the report from the finance
committee in the absence of Dave Cupp. The initial results of yesterday’s
Celebration Sunday are satisfactory. It is expected that pledging will continue
into January. The next Ministry Council meeting will be held with members of the
Executive Board also attending. This meeting will primarily be devoted to
planning the 2006 budget. Janet and Martha along with representatives from SPRC
and Trustees will be attending the next Finance Committee meeting on Nov. 20th.
November “Thanks” Offering: Discussion centered on not picking a
specific cause for the offering but highlighting areas of the church’s endeavors
to help people think about what they are thankful for at St. Luke’s. The
offering will go into the general fund. Ideas for the areas of focus included
child care, youth music programs, and the facility itself.
SPRC Report: Randy reported that the custodial position is in the
process of being changed from a contract to a staff position. Also, an outside
vendor, JanPro, is cleaning the Little School 3 evenings a week which will free
Dan Kuhl to concentrate on other areas of the church.
Evangelism Team: Ken reported that they are working on getting
promotional literature about the church for upcoming events ( Christmas Eve,
Fiddler,) held at St. Luke’s. Also they have met with the Communications Team
and due to similarity of the missions, the teams will be merging in the near
future.
Communications Team: The deadline for articles and events to be posted
to the Advent Calendar is Nov. 10th. The calendar will be published as a folded
one for distribution in a #10 envelope.
Staff Report: Lynda reported that most of the current planning is
around events during the Advent season. This year’s theme will be centered on
the manger. Janet would like to see a large crèche built as part of the season.
Chris said that pumpkin sales are going well. St. Luke’s keeps 40% of the
proceeds to help fund the youth program and the youth mission trips.
Appreciative Inquiry Report: Jerry presented a report that summarized
the responses thus far from the church community. See attached. Work is
continuing on this visioning stage with ongoing interviews. It is hoped that we
can shortly be moving into the next step- the dreaming stage. Jerry will be
discussing the timing of this with Janet in the near future. The committee
expressed gratitude to Jerry for all the work into preparing the report.
Capital Campaign Discussion: Martha presented information from one
person that was being considered to lead this effort. Both Janet and the
Executive Board want to interview at least one more candidate. Discussion
centered on doing the campaign in 2006 or 2007. Due to the fact that we are
already into the last part of 2005, it was felt that to start this in early 2006
is not feasible. The recommendation from Ministry Council is that we plan to do
this in 2007. We also recommended finalizing the candidate of choice in early
2006 and using the last part of 2006 for preparatory work for a campaign in
early 2007.
Report:
Worship- Lynda reported that the main projects currently are those of Fiddler on
the Roof and Advent.
Missions- Marie reported that the project for Coalition for the Homeless was
very successful thanks to the many donations from the congregation. The main
projects starting in November will be the Giving Tree and the Heifer Project.
Fellowship & Support- Lynda reported that several smaller teams (kitchen,
churchwide, etc.) will be combining into an “Events team”. The main UMW project
is the December candlelight dinner. UMM continues to struggle with membership.
Ministry Development- no report. Team has been on hiatus since the fall ministry
fair.
Operations- Ken discussed continued needs for members to be aware of security at
the church- both inside and outside of the building. There was a recent incident
where an apparent homeless individual was found living in the small house on the
playground. Those of us on committees are reminded to be sure the building is
locked when we leave.
Education- Lynda reported that Jenita is currently in Nashville. She was asked
to help, as part of the national committee, plan the vacation bible school
curriculum for next year. Chris reported that St. Luke’s and St. Andrew’s will
be planning a joint program on faith and sexuality for their youth. The program
will be held the weekend prior to Valentine’s Day 2006.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
Marie Fornof
