Pura Vida Presents FACE All Vocal Band Benefit Concert

Highlands Ranch, Colo. – Sept. 4, 2008 – Mark your calendars and be sure to join us for a Benefit Concert featuring the amazing FACE All Vocal Band at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008, at the Soiled Dove Underground at 7401 East 1st Avenue, Denver, Colo.  80230. The concert will also include the Mile 21 A Capella group.

FACE is a nationally recognized all-vocal rock band bringing a new edge and attitude to the human voice. Using the full range of sounds that the voice can produce, including vocal percussion, FACE performs rock, pop, funk and upbeat jazz. No other instruments or special effects – just six guys.

Mile 21 A Capella is a coed collegiate vocals group from the University of Colorado in Boulder.

The concert is a fundraiser for the John Wesley School in Santa Cruz del Quiche, Guatemala, which provides a quality alternative to local schools. Now in its fourth year, this ecumenical school has 300 children enrolled in Grades 1 to 9. Quality education and individual attention is provided to students who would otherwise not have the opportunity to attend school. The School is assisted by Pura Vida, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing educational opportunities for children in rural Guatemala villages through scholarships and support of local schools.

Education is a particular need in Guatemala; it is the long-term solution to many issues affecting rural Guatemalans, especially the indigenous. These include infant mortality that is among the worst in the western hemisphere (67% of indigenous children are malnourished); poverty (Guatemala is one of the poorest countries in the hemisphere; 75% of the population is estimated to live below the poverty line); and literacy (the average schooling of the indigenous population is 1.9 years). The John Wesley School offers an alternative to the public schools, which suffer from poorly trained teachers, large class sizes, and end at the sixth grade.

This fundraiser is part of an effort to raise $120,000 to construct a new wing at the John Wesley School, adding three classrooms so that the academic excellence offered by the school can be extended to grades 10 to 12.

The concert is sponsored by Pura Vida, P.O. Box 4029 Evergreen CO 80437, (303) 215-0994. Tickets to the concert are $20 and may be purchased at www.puravida.org.

St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 8817 S. Broadway, Highlands Ranch, CO 80129, is a co-sponsor of the event.
