CAMBODIA MEETING MINUTES FROM 10/15/00

Laurie had several handouts for the group.  If you missed the meeting, see
her for the handouts.  She passed out a list of things to take on the trip
for people to add to.  We will be making a community list of things to eat
with, etc. as well.  She will distribute the list when it is finalized.

Laurie also distributed the Policies and Procedures for Fundraising
Activities at St. Luke's form which needs to be completed for any fundraiser
we are doing.  Eric Ransick is the person we need to contact with our plans.
Kathy will submit for the spaghetti dinner and concessions.  Steve is
checking into the t-shirt sales.

Jim reported on his communications with Joseph.  Electricity is about 8 km
from the jobsite.  A generator will cost $800.  Rich Boon is checking on the
generator.  The drinking water is not very good at the site.  A water filter
will cost $150, but Joseph said we could his while we are there.  We
discussed several options for clean water.  Since hotel rooms will cost $15
to $20 a night for a double room, we will stay at the hut they will prepare
for us.  It can be used later for future work at the center.  They still
have $3,400.  St. Lukes is the main source of funds for their center
project.

Joseph had said that people from Siem Reap are helping to look after the
site.  We can buy labor to help them finish the project.  someone in Siem
Reap is seeking other funds to buy the other 3 lots, apparently they have
only bought one, the last report was in error.

Steve Riley said we need to consider bringing our own filters and camping
stoves for water.  Even bottled water there may be contaminated.  There was
a lot of discussion on this; we will continue to study this issue.

The Committee decided to hold spaghetti dinners on both nights for Godspell.
Brian Sorsby is getting most of the groceries donated.  We will also get the
lemon ice machine for the dinners.  There does not seem to be a good way to
know how many people will come, since we are not selling tickets, but taking
goodwill offerings for both the show and the dinner.  We will have $1 candy
and soda concessions at the Benefit Concert on 11/4 and during intermission
at Godspell on 11/17 and 11/18.  The Balu's are helping with the spaghetti
dinner and doing the concessions, but help from other committee members is
needed and appreciated!  Plan on being there to assist if at all possible.

We need to make sure these events are well-advertised to make our
fundraisers successful.  Tell everyone!

Rich Boon had some tapes to help us practice the language.  Copies are
available.  Sharon is also going to order international translators for
everyone which are nice picture cards to help us communicate.  We will need
to give her about $5 for the cost of these cards and shipping and handling.

Joyce Carnes asked about preparing meals.  Assuming we do our meals
together, do we need to do our own or shall we hire someone to prepare our
meals?  Jim will check with Joseph to see what would be feasible.

Sharon scheduled the second round shots for Thurs. 11/26.  We also discussed
toilet facilities, which will be very, very basic.  We will check into
setting something up for us to use.  Steve requested a list of tools which
we will discuss at the next meeting.

We also discussed bringing toys and school supplies for the children.  We
will put together list that will be welcome.  We need to make sure the toys
are simple and relevant to people there.  Care needs to be taken with the
toys.  The children are hungry so they chew on everything.  Rich is checking
into someone donating deflated soccer balls which we could take with us
along with a small pump.  We also discussed bringing hotel toiletries.

Steve reported on T-shirts to sell.  We will have embroidered polo shirts
and t-shirts with a general St. Lukes logo that we can continue to sell
after Christmas and into the next year.  We decided on the cross and flame
with St. Luke's UMC at the top and Mission Possible at the bottom, on the
left front side of the shirts.  We will again ask for goodwill offerings and
have receipts with the cost of the shirts and the excess as the donated
amount to use for tax deduction purposes.  Jim Ramsey's sister will help us
with these shirts.  We looked at other logo items, but decided to stick with
just the t-shirts.

Laurie reported on the "Buy a Brick" program which we will begin in December
and finish up in January.  People who have been unable to participate in our
other fundraisers or want to do a little more, will have another opportunity
to do so.  Joyce Carnes will also help with this responsibility.  Laurie is
working on a video for top donations level.

The Cambodia Committee will continue to meet every Sunday at 12:00 since we
still have so much to do!  We will try to end at 1:00 but sometimes will go
on to 1:30 if necessary.  If we can get started on time, we can finish
early, so we need to work on this.  Everyone will not be able to attend
every meeting, so if you have a report for the group and you cannot make it,
send your update to Laurie Gilbert, Kathy Balu, or someone you know will be
there.
