CAMBODIA MEETING MINUTES
January 13, 2002
Laurie Gilbert began the meeting and acknowledged the new members in our
group. She reminded us all that to be able to give as much as we do, we
need to take time to care for ourselves and read us a wonderful poem. We
asked for a show of hands of those who, at this time, are planning on going
to Cambodia. There were about 35 individuals who are indicating an
interest. We will cap the list at 40 participants and develop a waiting
list of others who would like to go, should someone have to drop out.
We discussed traveling in two teams with a few days overlap. It is easier
for traveling and accommodations to travel in smaller numbers. The
tentative dates are Thursday, December 26, 2002 to Thursday, January 9, 2003
for the first group, and Thursday, January 2, 2003 to Thursday, January 16,
2003 for the second group.
Travel time usually takes a few days. There will be a few individuals who
will go for the entire three weeks. They will probably stay in Bangkok for
a couple of nights and are looking at some other destinations to include on
their visit. Brett Vasten will look into other travel options.
The project will most likely be building a girls dormitory or some other
building on the site. We shared information to the new members on the
accommodations and facilities available, meals, and other preparations made
on the trip last year.
Laurie received a phone call from Sonrise Methodist Church in Colorado
Springs who are also planning to support a mission in Cambodia. Some of us
are going to brief them on our trip. Dalai will go to share some
information about Cambodia. We will be sure to invite them to our
fundraisers.
We will plan a Silent Auction for the beginning of June sometime. It will
be held on a Saturday from 3:00 to 8:00pm. The Silent Auction will be held
from 3:00 to 5:00, dinner from 5:00 to 6:00, 6:00 to 7:00 entertainment, and
7:00 to 7:30 will be time for final bidding. We may have a live auction at
the end for non-bidded or special items. Betsy Keyack, John Williams, and
Marie Fornoff are coordinating the Silent Auction items. Dan Raap and
Brian
Sorsby will help coordinate the food. Lynne Sorsby and Dale Balu will help
with the entertainment and Laurie and Kathy will do the decorations.
John Williams will coordinate a carwash and will need all of our support.
We intend to get the Aaron and Youth in on this project too!
Laurie showed us a sample of the Shells to Bells made out of recycled land
mines. We will sell them one month before Easter and some at Mission
Sunday, as a way to raise additional funds.
Laurie and Kathy will work out a date for Parents Day Out and will be
looking for volunteers to entertainment children and give parents a break.
We may have Handyman Services offered at the Silent Auction and will need
volunteers to offer their skill with chores or other odd jobs that people
might need.
We will be doing the Bricks of Hope whereby individuals or families make
donations and get their name on bricks that are then attached to a mock-up
building and displayed. Brian has offered to build a new hut for this
year's display.
Steve reported that the Christmas Tree Lot project will take quite a bit of
funds up front. We may not want to make such a large investment and then
be
responsible for selling all of the trees.
Marie reported that her committee are planning on a Craft Bazaar for Nov 2
or Nov 9. We could also offer concessions and sell the tables to other
crafters who will pay for the space, but keep their own proceeds. She will
check on how it was done several years ago. We need to get the word out so
people can start working on their projects to donate.
Dick mentioned that April 1 to 14 will be a Cambodia Tour led by Ron
Tompkins and the 3rd Cambodia Initiative in Long Beach, attended by Steve
and Dale last year.
Joyce will look into retail stores allowing Church groups to raise funds by
helping out with customers or with inventory. Church groups also sometimes
help with concessions at the ball fields or stadiums for pay that can be
donated. Joyce also asked if we could get merchandise from Cambodia that
we
could sell at our Silent Auction. Dalai will look into it. Perhaps
Ron
could bring back some merchandise for us. We could talk to Pastor Kim
about
others who are traveling there.
Our next meeting will be Sunday, February 10th. We will have information
on
travel planners, and a Silent Auction update. David and Marie Fornoff have
offered to bring lunch next time.
PLEASE MAKE ANY ADDITIONS OR CORRECTIONS AND LET ME KNOW! THANKS AND
BLESSINGS TO ALL OF YOU FOR ALL YOU DO!
