Minutes
"Cambodia Mission's Project"
from 3/19/00 meeting
13 members attended 2nd meeting
Bert and Jan Stull, Laurie Gilbert, Nita Dunn, Dale and Kathy Balu, Ken
Decker, Esther Miyahara-Cho, Brian Sorsby, Dr. Evans, Linda Backus, Brett
and Marla Vasten.
Started meeting with reading last months minutes. Dale Balu will email
everyone with minutes and reminder of next meeting each month.
Everyone agreed to a "Taste of Cambodia" as the main
fund-raiser. Also,
strong interest
in having a Silent Auction along with dinner. This would be held in July,
probably during
the 2nd week of when Dalai is here. Discussed need for steering committee
for the
fund-raiser.
Ken Decker- willing to assist in food
Linda Backus and Kathy Balu- willing to work on decorations Jan Stull-
agreed to contact Joan Morrey about previous Silent Auction. Discussed
need
to find some one for publications. Noted that Michelle Mallory was
involved
with last mission. It was decided that by next meeting details of
the
fund-raiser needed to be addressed. Another possible fund-raiser is
working
in the flee market with youth and UMW. Laurie will talk with Dottie about
this to confirm. This would probably be taking place on the first or
second
Sat. in May.
Bert Stull discussed airline flights and fairs. Shared possible flight
scenario's. At the present, to fly a group of 20 to 30 people to Cambodia
and back it would cost each $1699.00 per person. Prices will very until
solid date for trip is made. An $80.00 deposit would be required.
Not a
set date for this deposit at this time. Bert will let us know our latest
date. From there we will set final confirmation on those who will be going
to Cambodia. Brett Vasten told Bert he could help with the airline info,
he
is able to view it daily.
Esther informed us Peter Reif had drafted the formal letter for Dalai, he
will also be sending the final letter either Monday, May 20th or the 21st.
It will be sent to GBM and to Joseph in Cambodia.
It will cost $284.00 round trip for Dalai's additional transportation
needed.
It was
thought our seed money could cover that.
Balu's will bring in their scale to help promote our jug of "change for
Cambodia."
Esther discussed a little more on the building project. We probably won't
know what we
are building until much closer to time of mission. It would be a building,
but what part of
the community center we won't know for sure. Explained that not only is our
mission to
help build a community center, but to show our support, compassion and love
by just
being there.
It was brought to our attention Jim Ramsey wants very much to go, he would
like to be the coordinator for our communal time which would involve
"music". He wants also to spend music time with the children in
the
village. It was noted that possible assistance in funds might be an
option.
Esther discussed in good detail several options for accommodations coming
and going to Cambodia. On the journey there she suggested staying two nights
in Bangkok to recover, staying at a Christian Missionary Retreat. American
food served. On our return home trip, we could stop in Singapore, she knew
of a hotel that was agreeable for about $50.00 a night. Staying possibly
another 2 nights here. Accommodations at missions site still undecided for
sure, however, Esther said Joseph is aware of our concerns and will do what
is necessary.
Esther also spoke at a District Gathering of women. They are very
interested in supporting the mission, we need to be sure to invite them to
"Taste of Cambodia."
Esther will bring video of Cambodia to next meeting!
It was discussed that we should have St. Lukes web page link up to Jackson
Heights UMC in NY To view their pictures and stories about their experiences
in Cambodia.
(Same location we would be going to).
Balu's agreed to bring lunch for next meeting.
Next meeting is Sunday, April 9th at 12:15 in the "fellowship hall"
